Thanksgiving--Even though M had the entire week of Thanksgiving off (nice huh?), J-rod worked the night shift the week leading up to Thanksgiving so we weren't able to go out of town and be with family for the holiday. However since J-rod did have Thanksgiving Day off, we were able to continue our family tradition of having Thanksgiving dinner with good friends!
Thanksgiving Day, after J-rod got a good dose of sleep, we headed over with our Stove Top stuffing (the only kind of stuffing J-rod will eat, and the only kind M can eat), Martinelli's Sparkling Cider, homemade apple pie (recipe to follow), and Green Bean casserole, to the K family's home. We enjoyed a yummy dinner and a good evening with the K's. Along with dinner we watched a movie, played Yatzee, and the kids played LEGOS. Though I didn't get any pictures of the evening, we did have a great time!
Black Friday--Before the crack of dawn the morning after Thanksgiving, Zippy went on her first EVER early morning 'Black Friday' excursion with her good friend J and her daughter M--what an experience!! The only store we made it to in search of GREAT deals was our local Wal-Mart, but that was enough.
We went not knowing that our normally 'non-24hr' Super Wal-Mart had opened their doors at midnight and that people had been in line ever since! Seriously??? People, are you CRAZY?? Once we realized our rookie mistake of getting to the store just a half-hour before sale time, we quickly came up with a plan of attack, decided to skip getting a cart (to better maneuver our way around the store), headed to the electronics department, got into the respective lines of what we were after, and not only hoped that we were each in the correct lines but that we would each get what we had gone in for!
When we first got to the store it seemed somewhat quiet but as it got closer to the magic hour when the special deals would be made available for purchase, you could very clearly hear the buzz throughout the store increase in volume--this was AMAZING to me! It seemed like there was even a low rumble in the floor beneath my feet! There was a feeling of tension and almost of panic throughout the crowd. The mob mentality was made very evident as a group of customers began tearing into a nearby pallet before the appointed hour. An employee who cautioned the crowd with, "Hey! you can't do that!" was met with "Try and stop us!" Um, yikes! It was then that I questioned my own sanity in coming out at this early hour, were the deals I was after really worth any risk that might amount if the crowd became truly unruly? Fortunately it was just a few moments later that employees throughout the store began passing out the deals, appeasing the crazy crowds!
After a few nervous minutes of uncertainty, J, M, and I each were able to get our hands on the HOT products we had gone in for (I had mainly gone for Christmas and birthday presents for our kids), plus a few more great deals that we hadn't anticipated going home with and off we headed for the front of the store. As we walked towards one of the many LONG lines, we realized we were in desperate need of a cart! Lol!
We had some fun, got what we had gone for, and then vowed we would NEVER do it again! Ha, ha...guess we'll have to wait and see if we turn it into a new tradition depending on how we feel about it come this next Thanksgiving! : )
After my exciting introduction to early morning Black Friday shopping was over, I went home to take a nap! Since the kids were still asleep J-rod decided to head out to Wal-Mart and see what left over deals he could come up with. J-rod didn't fare as well as I did and returned home empty handed. After some online searching on J-rods part and then getting everyone ready for the day, out we headed to find J-rod his ideal Black Friday deal. We did 'ultimately' find what J-rod was looking for and will share in detail his find in an upcoming post.
