December 2011: Second day in Guatemala City

Day 2 in Guatemala City we visited with many members of my mom's family.  First we had a delicious lunch at my Tia Antonieta's house (I wish I were half the cook my mom and aunts are!). Tia Antonieta is one of my mom's younger sister's. Most of her family was home for the Christmas Break so we also were able to visit with lots of my cousins. Tia Antonietta and her children were so welcoming. My mom's oldest sister, my Tia Doris also came to lunch that day. We had such a lovely visit with all of them.

Lots of laughter was shared that day.

With my lovely Tia Doris.

I'm so grateful we were able to spend a few hours with Tia Doris that day--such a wonderful woman!  She never married, but was a wonderful companion to my grandmother throughout her life (especially after my grandfather passed away) and a great help to her siblings.

After visiting at Tia Antonieta's house, she and her daughter Leslie took us to visit my great-aunt Tia Ligia. It had been ages since the last time I saw her; it was during one of my few visits to Guatemala as a young girl. Tia Ligia kept cracking us up with her quick wit. Her 81 year old body may have been giving up on her, but her mind sure wasn't! When we first arrived, she couldn't quite believe her eyes that one, I was there and two, that J-rod is so incredibly tall (and handsome)! Throughout our trip J-rod's good looks, charm, and towering height caused a bit of excitement with members of my family from both sides. As evident in all the photos from our trip, I don't come from very tall stock. Lol! ☺

Spunky Tia Alicia

Just around the corner from Tia Ligia's house lives her older sister, my great aunt Tia Alicia who was 83 at the time.  Her name inspired us to pick our own little A's first name when we discovered we were having a little girl. Tia Alicia also kept us in stitches throughout our visit with her quick wit and spunk.  She kept joking that she would need to get her a step stool to properly greet J-rod or he would have to scoop her up just so she could see him properly. When J-rod commented on the beautiful artwork that adorns her house, Tia Alicia told us that they were all painted by her dearly departed husband. J-rod asked if he had been a painter by trade and did he sell his painting? She replied, "no, it was his hobby. But I'll sell you one right now if you want. How much will you offer me?" She caught us all of guard. Ha, ha! ☺

We ended the night back in Tia Antonieta's neighborhood where we met up with the rest of my cousins as they were taking part in a Posada Navideña. We got there right at the tale end of it. Too bad we didn't get to see the procession from the beginning! Follow the link to learn more about Las Posadas in Guatemala. Las Posadas are a festive Christmas tradition that originated in Spain and is now celebrated in Mexico, Guatemala, and in parts of the Southwestern United States.
